Daphne Seminar highlights funds
Forty-five participants from local authority, business, law enforcement, academic and grass-roots organisations filled Newman University College’s board room on 20th November to hear nine expert speakers discuss and set out the EU’s Daphne programme, which aims to help combat violence against women, children and young people & protect vulnerable groups. This annual event was hosted by Newman University College, Birmingham with support from West Midlands in Europe and EU Connects.
Speakers included Stan Tucker, Professor and Dean of Newman University College along with Madeline Martyn who successfully applied to the 2007 Daphne Calls for Proposals to implement a research project. The pair opened the seminar with their experiences; “Daphne offers a flexible source of funding to support highly innovatory research work. The themes of Daphne and the focus on social
justice and human rights make it an ideal vehicle to encourage groundbreaking collaborative work” said Professor Tucker.
They were followed by a presentation from West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne (Liberal Democrats) who highlighted her work as Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee which has enabled her to help design and influence EU funding to combat violence and crime.
The second keynote presentation came from Marilena Raouna, Daphne Programme Manager at the European Commission’s Directorate for Freedom, Security and Justice which is responsible for the Daphne Programme. Marilena’s presentation set out the key aspects of the Daphne programme, explaining how funding can be used by a variety of public and non-profit private organisations for a variety of purposes including awareness raising activities, developing training & counselling. Sophie Lainé, European Policy Advisor and Daphne expert helped to facilitate the session. Mandy Heard, Business Development Manager, Newman University College wrapped up the event and complemented the speaker’s advice and guidance on applying for Daphne projects.
